How to: Protect your plants against frost

Protect your plants against frost

Winter might be dragging on, especially in the southern states of Australia, but we’ve still got a month to go. And with the possibility of another arctic blast, it’s crucial to safeguard your plants against those frosty conditions. Here are four tried-and-true methods to help your plants weather the winter and come out strong in September:

Mulch Matters

Mulching is a game-changer when it comes to protecting your plants from the cold. Use our WaterLOCK Mulch Mat with the mulch of your choice to help insulate and create a barrier between the icy air and your soil. This can also help to minimise stress by keeping the soil temperature more stable, which is particularly helpful if your plants are experiencing frequent freezing and thawing.

Water Wisely

Timing your winter watering is key. Use a soil moisture meter or the classic finger test—stick your finger into the soil up to the second knuckle. If it feels dry at that depth, it’s time for a drink. If it’s still moist, hold off and check again in a week.

Watering in the morning is best during winter. This allows the water to soak into the soil and reach the roots before temperatures plummet at night, giving your plants the hydration they need while reducing the risk of frost damage.

Hessian Wrap

For plants in containers or pots, wrapping them with hessian, such as our Hessian Fabric can provide essential protection against frost. This insulation helps keep the soil and roots warmer.

Wrap loosely to allow for air circulation and avoid covering the entire plant, as it needs to breathe. Remember to remove the hessian when the weather warms up.

Natural hessian, such as ours, is especially effective because it’s a strong, biodegradable material that not only protects against extreme weather but also helps control soil erosion on slopes.

Thermal Cover

Our Thermal Cover provides a protective barrier between plants and the cold air, helping prevent frost damage. It can insulate by trapping heat radiating from the ground and reduces the loss of heat to the cold night air. Our Thermal Cover is lightweight and breathable, allowing air, sunlight and moisture to reach the plants while providing protection.
