Mulching is a game-changer when it comes to protecting your plants from the cold. Timing your winter watering is key. Use a soil moisture meter or the classic finger test—stick your finger into the soil up to the second knuckle. If it feels dry at that depth, it’s time for a drink. If it’s still moist, hold off and check again in a week.
Watering in the morning is best during winter. This allows the water to soak into the soil and reach the roots before temperatures plummet at night, giving your plants the hydration they need while reducing the risk of frost damage.
